In 2018, the Carpinteria Valley Water District completed a comprehensive water meter replacement program to enable the District’s water distribution system with electronic reading capability, as well as to replace meters that had served beyond their expected useful lifetimes. The program upgraded or replaced approximately 4,450 meters with an automatic meter infrastructure (AMI) system for all commercial, industrial, public authority and residential water meters 2 inches and smaller in size.

The new meter installations include a data transmitter, which is connected to the water meter and allows for the automatic transmission of water use data. Customers can opt out of this service and have the transmitter disconnected from the meter by filling out the application below.

The following is an overview of the project including public outreach, benefits of the program, and frequently asked questions.

Background

The water meter replacement program is part of the District’s Efficiency initiative. Water meters are the devices used to measure the amount of water delivered to our customers. The new system allows the District to more efficiently and accurately track individual usage for billing purposes, as well as monitor and evaluate community water demands. The new meters can now be read from data collectors either in a moving vehicle or mounted to infrastructure across the Carpinteria Valley.

Benefits

  • Minimize the need for personnel to go on the property
  • Early detection if a leak is occurring in customer plumbing
  • Improve the efficiency of meter reading and water billing
  • Increase the quality of customer service by eliminating the need for estimated bills
  • Real time information for customers regarding their water use patterns
  • Prevent recording errors

Please Keep your Meters Accessible

District meters and meter boxes must remain accessible at all times in order to read and repair meters. Here are a few examples:
